We will learn about the subtraction of 4-digit numbers
(without borrowing and with borrowing).
We know when one number is subtracted from another number
the result obtained is called the difference. The greater number is called the minuend
and the smaller number is called the subtrahend. We use subtraction when we
take away, compare, to find out what does not belong to a group.

The rules of subtraction remain the same as for the number
having less digits. We first write the greater number at the top. Then subtract
the digits column-wise ones from ones, tens from tens, hundreds from hundreds, thousands
from thousands and so on.
Properties of Subtraction of 4-Digit Numbers:
Property – 1: When we subtract zero from a 4-digit number, we always get the number itself.
4225 – 0 = 4225
Property – 2:
When we subtract 1 from any 4-digit number, we get the number just before the giver number.
3150 – 1 = 3149 (Predecessor of 3150)
Property – 3:
When we subtract a 4-digit number from itself, we always get zero.
7645 – 7645 = 0
I. Subtraction of 4-Digit Numbers (without borrowing):
Subtraction of 4-digit numbers is similar to subtraction of 3-digit numbers. The steps remain the same.
Consider some of the following examples.
1. Subtract 3276 from 5896.
Solution:

Subtract ones i.e., 6 – 6 = 0 and write down 0 in ones |

Subtract thousands i.e., 5 – 3 = 2 and write down 2 in thousands |
So the difference between 5896 and 3276 is 2620.
2. Subtract 1345 from 3786.
Solution:
Start subtracting ones first, then tens, then hundreds and finally thousands.
Step I: Subtract the ones. 6 – 5 = 1 Step 2: Subtract the tens. 8 – 4 = 4 Step 3: Subtract the hundreds. 7 – 3 = 4 Step 4: Subtract the thousands. 3 – 1 = 2 |

Step I: Arrange the number in coloumn of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
Step II: Subtract ones.

2. Subtract 1256 from 2574.
Solution:
Step I: We start subtraction with ones place. We see that 4 ones is less than 6 ones. So, we regroup 7 tens 4 ones = 6 tens + 14 ones Now, subtract 6 ones from 14 ones. 14 ones – 6 ones = 8 ones. Write 8 in the ones place. |

Subtraction from Zeros
When we have to subtract a number from another number containing zero, we do the regrouping in the same way, as we do for other numbers.
Let us see how regrouping is done in the following example:
3. Subtract 3258 from 8000.

Use a short cut. Just subtract 1 from both the numbers.
