Solution:
14.7 ÷ 2.1
[Count the number of decimal digits in the divisor and we observe that after decimal there is 1 number so we divide the number by 10.]
= 147/10 ÷ 21/10
= 147/10 × 10/21 [reverse it to multiplication]
= (147 × 10)/(10 × 21)
= 1470/210
Now divide the numbers as usual.
Therefore, 14.7 ÷ 2.1 = 7

2. 1.296 ÷ 0.108
Solution:
1.296 ÷ 0.108
[Count the number of decimal digits in the divisor and we observe that after decimal there are 3 numbers so we divide the number by 1000]
= (1296/1000) ÷ (108/1000)
= (1296/1000) × (1000/108)[reverse it to multiplication]
= (1296 × 1000)/1000 × 108)
= 1296000/108000
Now divide the numbers as usual.
Therefore, 1.296 ÷ 0.108 = 12
Alternative method of solving division of a decimal by a decimal
RULES
(i) Count the number of decimal digits in the divisor.
(ii) Move the decimal in dividend that many places to the right.
(iii) Write the divisor without the decimal.
(iv) Now divide the numbers as usual.
For example:
3. 8.005 ÷ 0.05
Solution:
8.005 ÷ 0.05
[Count the number of decimal digits in the divisor.]
[Move the decimal in dividend that many places to the right.]
800.5 ÷ 5
[Write the divisor without the decimal.]
[Now divide the numbers as usual.]
Therefore, 8.005 ÷ 0.05 = 160.1
4. 76.363 ÷ 0.7
Solution:
76.363 ÷ 0.7
[Count the number of decimal digits in the divisor.]
[Move the decimal in dividend that many places to the right.]
763.63 ÷ 7
[Write the divisor without the decimal.]
[Now divide the numbers as usual.]
Therefore, 76.363 ÷ 0.7 = 109.09
