    Here we will solve different types of word problems on multiplication and division of fractions.

    I. Solve the following word problems on multiplication of fractions.

    (i) A water bottle contains 2\(\frac{1}{2}\) liters of water. How much water 30 such bottles will contain?

    (ii) One school uniform requires 2\(\frac{1}{4}\) m of cloths. How much cloth 28 such shirts required?

    (iii) Cost of an ink pot is ₹ 8\(\frac{1}{4}\). Find the cost of 12 such ink pots.

    (iv) A pool car covers 18\(\frac{1}{2}\) km in one litre of diesel. How many kilometres will it cover in 8\(\frac{1}{4}\) litres of diesel? 

    (v) Michael needs 15\(\frac{1}{2}\) dozens of oranges. If the cost of 1 dozen orange is ₹ 5\(\frac{1}{2}\). How much money Michael need to buy 15\(\frac{1}{2}\) dozens of oranges?

    Answer:

    I. (i) 75 liters of water.

    (ii) 63 m of cloths.

    (iii) ₹ 99

    (iv) 152\(\frac{5}{8}\) km

    (v) ₹ 85.25

    II. Solve the following word problems on division of fractions.

    (i) 15\(\frac{3}{5}\) kg of sugar are to be equally distributed among 16 poor people. How much each people will get?

    (ii) How many pieces of a ribbon \(\frac{3}{7}\) m long can be cut from a roll of 2\(\frac{4}{7}\) m long?

    (iii) How many pieces of a cake of \(\frac{3}{8}\) g can be cut from from 3\(\frac{3}{4}\) g of cake?

    (iv) How many packets contain 2\(\frac{1}{4}\) kg of sugar can be made from 58\(\frac{1}{2}\) kg of sugar?

    (v) Nairitee needs some pieces of ribbons of \(\frac{4}{9}\) m long. How many such pieces can be cut from a ribbon of ribbon of 14\(\frac{2}{9}\) m long?

    Answer:

    II. (i) 0975 kg

    (ii) 6 pieces

    (iii) 10 pieces

    (iv) 26 packets

    (v) 32 pieces

    III. Solve the following mixed word problems on multiplication and division of fractions.

    (i) The cost of 5\(\frac{1}{4}\) ℓ of petrol is ₹ 218\(\frac{1}{4}\). What is the cost of of 8\(\frac{1}{3}\) ℓ of petrol? 

    (ii) The product of two fractions is 9\(\frac{2}{7}\). One of them is 5\(\frac{3}{8}\). Find the other one.

    (iii) 5\(\frac{1}{4}\) kg of flour is needed for making 12 cakes. How much flour is needed for making one cake?

    (iv) 4 balls weigh 5\(\frac{3}{4}\) kg. How much will 8 such balls weigh?

    (v) The cost of 2\(\frac{1}{2}\) ℓ of milk is ₹ 27\(\frac{1}{2}\) What is the cost of 6\(\frac{1}{2}\) ℓ of milk?

    (vi) 2\(\frac{1}{5}\) m of cloth is required for making a shirt. How much cloth is required for making 14 such shirts?

    (vii) A piece of ribbon is 7\(\frac{1}{4}\) cm long. Find the total length of 38 such pieces.

    (viii) James bought 12 registers. Each register costs ₹ 21\(\frac{3}{7}\). He gave the shopkeeper a note of five-hundred rupee. How much he get back from the shopkeeper?

    (ix) David had ₹ 305\(\frac{2}{5}\) in her purse. He gave ₹ 103\(\frac{2}{5}\) to her younger sister Patricia and bought 3 books costing ₹ 25\(\frac{1}{2}\) each. How much money is left with her?

    (x) The product of three fractions are 4\(\frac{3}{8}\). If two of the 2\(\frac{1}{4}\) and 1\(\frac{1}{8}\), find the third one.

    Answer:

    III. (i) ₹ 346\(\frac{3}{7}\)

    (ii) 1\(\frac{219}{301}\)

    (iii) \(\frac{7}{16}\) kg

    (iv) 11\(\frac{1}{2}\) kg

    (v) ₹ 71\(\frac{1}{2}\)

    (vi) 30\(\frac{4}{5}\) m

    (vii) 275\(\frac{1}{2}\) cm

    (viii) ₹ 242\(\frac{6}{7}\)

    (ix) ₹ 125\(\frac{1}{2}\)

    (x) 1\(\frac{59}{81}\)
